Curriculum Vitae
Andrew is a degree-educated engineer, producer, and composer who has worked at Abbey Road Studios for the past 35 years and now works ‘freelance’ for Abbey Road Studios, from his home in Norfolk.
One of the world’s foremost mastering and restoration engineers, he has won four Gramophone Awards and has two American Grammy nominations to his name, as well as numerous other awards and accolades.
Andrew is a pioneer of digital restoration processes, using state-of-the-art technology like CEDAR, much of which he helped in the process of early development which he uses on film scores, classical, jazz, spoken word audio, and all genres of pop music.
He engineers recordings from as early as 1897, through 78 records, vinyl and LP’s, tapes, CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and Dolby Atmos masters, and has worked with some of the most illustrious artists and producers from around the world, including in the USA, Europe, Russia, Africa and Asia.
Andrew has worked with some of the greatest artists in the world including David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Coldplay, U2, The Cure, Rush, Robbie Williams, Radiohead, The Who, Simple Minds, and The Beatles. He has engineered for many award-winning ‘hit’ musicals including the London hit show Dirty Dancing, the Mel Brooks hit show The Young Frankenstein and Love Never Dies for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and other albums.
In the world of Hollywood blockbusting films, his mastering work includes the scores for The Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince‘, scored by Nicholas Hooper (which was nominated for an American Grammy Award), V For Vendetta scored by Dario Marianelli (which was nominated for an International Film Music Critics Award) and the BAFTA-winning film Atonement, again scored by Dario Marianelli, which received the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score, a Golden Globe Award and a World Soundtrack Award.
Andrew transferred the first (and thought ‘lost’) studio demo acetate recording of The Beatles song ‘Love Me Do’, owned by Sir George Martin and restored by Andrew and released for the first time on The Beatles Anthology box set.
In the classical world, he has worked with a litany of modern and past artists, including the world-famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich on the box set of The Russian Years, The Complete HMV recordings of Noel Coward on EMI, (which was American Grammy-nominated), a 69 CD boxset of the world’s most famous singer Maria Callas: The Complete Studio Recordings for Warner Classics and in producing The EMI Classics Centenary Edition 11 CD Box set, for which he was American Grammy-nominated.
He is an expert in forensic restoration. He works with the British police, the UK government as well as business clients in ‘recapturing’ audio for legal and private investigations.
Andrew gives expert lectures to industry groups around the world notably in the USA, Hong Kong, and across Europe, talking about the Audio Restoration & Mastering processes he has developed and his association with the Award-Winning Restoration Company CEDAR. He teaches piano to diploma level, is a composer, keen harpsichord player and has recently been appointed as a Director of Music Preserved, a large and unique archive of rare, historic recordings.
