Andrew Walter is one of the world’s leading experts in audio restoration and mastering and has worked with some of the greatest artists in the world.

A former Abbey Road Studios engineer for 35 years, Andrew is now a freelance mastering and audio restoration engineer & consultant for Abbey Road Studios.

He runs his specialist mastering & expert audio restoration agency ‘Mill Arts Music‘ from his farm in Norfolk, UK.

Andrew is a degree-educated engineer, producer, and composer who has worked at Abbey Road Studios for the past 35 years and now works ‘freelance’ for Abbey Road Studios, from his home in Norfolk.

One of the world’s foremost mastering and restoration engineers, he has won four Gramophone awards and has two American Grammy nominations to his name, as well as numerous other accolades.

Andrew is a pioneer of digital restoration processes, using state-of-the-art technology like CEDAR, much of which he helped in the process of early development which he uses on film scores, classical, jazz, spoken word audio, and all genres of pop music.

He engineers recordings from as early as 1897, through 78 records, LP’s, tapes, CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and Dolby Atmos, and with artists and producers from around the world, including in the USA, Russia, Africa and Asia.

Andrew has worked with some of the greatest artists in the world including David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Coldplay, U2, The Cure, Rush, Robbie Williams, Radiohead, The Who, Simple Minds, and The Beatles. He has also engineered for many award-winning ‘hit’ musicals including The Lord Of The Rings, Dirty Dancing, and Love Never Dies for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber as well as numerous Hollywood blockbusters including Harry Potter, V For Vendetta and the BAFTA-winning film Atonement, which received the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score.

Andrew transferred the first (and thought ‘lost’) studio demo acetate recording of The Beatles song ‘Love Me Do’, owned by Sir George Martin and restored by Andrew and released for the first time on The Beatles Anthology box set.

In the classical world, he has worked with a litany of modern and past artists, including the world-famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, the world-class singer Maria Callas and in producing The EMI CLASSICS Centenary Box, for which he was American Grammy-nominated.

He is an expert in forensic restoration. He works with the British police, the UK government as well as business clients in ‘recapturing’ audio for legal and private investigations.

Andrew gives expert lectures to industry groups around the world notably in the USA, Hong Kong, and across Europe, talking about audio restoration & mastering processes. He teaches piano to diploma level, is a composer, keen harpsichord player and has recently been appointed as a Director of Music Preserved, an archive of rare, historic recordings.
